German FMC's Bold Leap: From Fabless to IDM in FeRAM Sector
2025-07-22
In recent years, with the intensification of global competition in the semiconductor industry, Europe's influence in semiconductor manufacturing has gradually waned. However, this situation may be changed by a German company. On July 18, according to German media reports, FMC, a German company specializing in HfO₂-based FeRAM ferroelectric memory, a type of non-volatile memory, plans to build its first wafer-fab in the technology park in Magdeburg, Germany, transforming from the current Fabless external foundry model to an IDM with its own production capabilities.
FMC's IDM Transformation Plan
FMC's transformation plan is of great significance. Since the bankruptcy of Qimonda in 2009, large-scale memory chip manufacturers have disappeared in Europe, and the global memory production focus has been locked in the East Asia region. FMC's shift to IDM is expected to change this situation, strengthen Europe's technological sovereignty and resilience in key semiconductor areas. On the other hand, FMC's establishment of a factory is also expected to boost the confidence of Magdeburg, Saxony-Anhalt, and even the whole of Germany in developing the semiconductor industry.
The Unique Advantages of FeRAM Technology
FeRAM (ferroelectric random-access memory) is a type of non-volatile memory technology. Its working principle is similar to SDRAM, but it uses ferroelectric-characteristic materials instead of traditional dielectrics, thereby acquiring the function of non-volatile memory. FMC's core technology is its self-developed "DRAM +" solution. This technology uses hafnium oxide (HfO₂) as the ferroelectric layer instead of the traditional lead zirconate titanate (PZT) material, achieving compatibility with processes below 10 nanometers. This improvement not only increases the storage capacity of traditional FeRAM from 4-8MB to the Gb-GB level but also retains the characteristic of non-volatile memory, that is, data will not be lost after power-off. FMC's CEO Thomas Rueckes said: "The ferroelectric effect of hafnium oxide can transform DRAM capacitors into non-volatile memory units, while balancing high performance and low power consumption, and is especially suitable for the persistent memory needs of artificial intelligence computing."
Industrial Cooperation and Future Outlook
To ensure the smooth progress of the entire process from R & D to mass production, FMC has launched close cooperation with many partners. As early as April this year, FMC announced a strategic cooperation with semiconductor company Neumonda to establish a new-type non-volatile memory chip (FeRAM) production line in Dresden, Germany. The core of the cooperation between the two parties is FMC's "DRAM +" technology. This technology uses hafnium oxide (HfO₂), which is compatible with processes below 10nm, as the ferroelectric layer instead of the traditional lead zirconate titanate (PZT) material. The storage capacity is increased from 4-8MB of traditional FeRAM to the GB level, while maintaining the characteristic of not losing data after power-off. The ultimate goal of the two parties is to rebuild Germany's memory chip industry, and this cooperation has taken a key step.
In addition, FMC also plans to introduce its own advanced process technology for mass production of logic chips mounted at the bottom of the FeRAM stack to improve overall performance and integration flexibility. If FMC can successfully transform into an IDM and achieve large-scale mass production of FeRAM, it is expected to reshape the European semiconductor industry landscape and enhance the EU's autonomy and supply chain resilience in the field of key chips.
