Microchip's Two Acquisitions: Aerospace & Defense and Edge AI
2026-10-14
On October 9, 2026, Microchip Technology announced that it had completed its acquisition of VORAGO Technologies. Headquartered in Austin, Texas, VORAGO is a privately held semiconductor company focused on radiation-hardened and radiation-tolerant microcontrollers (MCUs) and microprocessors (MPUs).
The core assets of the acquisition include VORAGO's radiation-hardened MCU and MPU product lines, as well as its patented HARDSIL® process technology. HARDSIL hardens commercial semiconductors through cost-effective, high-volume manufacturing, which can reduce the design time and cost of new radiation-hardened products and improve the radiation tolerance of existing products without redesign. VORAGO's devices are designed to continue operating in environments where standard electronics would fail, tolerating high radiation exposure and extreme temperatures up to 200°C. They are intended for mission-critical environments such as deep space, defense, and industrial applications.
Through this acquisition, Microchip combines Hailo's AI acceleration capabilities with its own MCU, MPU, FPGA, connectivity, security, and power management product lines, covering edge intelligent systems from low-power smart cameras to high-performance robots and autonomous machines. Hailo brings an active community of more than 100 customers and over 10,000 developers, and Microchip plans to continue supporting Hailo's existing product portfolio and software environment.
