Infineon Divests Thailand Backend Facility in Strategic Manufacturing Upgrade

Recently, Infineon Technologies, a leading provider of power semiconductors and IoT solutions, officially announced the completion of the sale of its backend manufacturing facility in Bangkok/Nonthaburi, Thailand. The buyer is Malaysian Pacific Industries Berhad (MPI), with a transaction value of $77.95 million.
The transaction was structured as an asset transfer involving Thai entities held by three Infineon subsidiaries—Spansion LLC, Spansion Inc, and Cypress Semiconductor Corp. Under the agreement, MPI will assume full operational control of the backend facility and retain all production-related personnel, ensuring workforce continuity and stability for ongoing projects. As a critical component of the deal, Infineon and MPI have entered into a long-term supply agreement and committed to joint development collaboration in innovative packaging solutions.
Infineon's Strategy: From Capacity Reduction to Structural Optimization
This decision reflects Infineon's dual-track strategy of "in-house manufacturing plus reliable OSAT partnerships." By transferring mature capacity to professional assembly and test service providers, Infineon can redirect management resources toward cutting-edge technology R&D and high-end capacity construction, while leveraging MPI's specialized operations to enhance overall supply chain flexibility and cost efficiency. Notably, Infineon has emphasized that this sale does not signify a withdrawal from the Thai market. On the contrary, the company is deepening its strategic presence in Southeast Asia through a combination of "old facility divestment plus new facility construction."
Proceeding in parallel with the legacy facility sale is Infineon's new round of investment in Thailand. In January 2026, Infineon held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new backend wafer fab in Samut Prakan, located south of Bangkok.
