TSMC's 2nm Mass Production: Orders Accepted Next Month, Cost Reaches $30,000
2025-03-25
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the global semiconductor foundry leader, has once again achieved a breakthrough in advanced process technology. TSMC will hold a 2nm production expansion ceremony at the Kaohsiung plant on March 31, and will accept orders for 2nm wafers from April 1. The move marks TSMC becoming the first company to achieve mass production of 2nm chips, continuing its leading position in global semiconductor manufacturing.
TSMC's 2nm Mass Production Plan
TSMC plans to simultaneously start mass production of 2nm chips at its Hsinchu Baoshan plant and Kaohsiung plant in the second half of 2025. The company's chairman, Mark Liu, revealed that the demand for 2nm technology is extremely strong, even surpassing that of the 3nm process at the same period. Currently, the trial production yield of 2nm chips at the Hsinchu Baoshan plant has reached over 60%, laying a solid foundation for mass production. It is expected that by the end of 2025, the monthly production capacity of 2nm chips will reach 50,000 wafers, and this will be further increased to 120,000 to 130,000 wafers in 2026.
TSMC's 2nm process employs the Gate-All-Around (GAA) transistor technology, which is considered the successor to the FinFET (Fin Field-Effect Transistor). Compared to the 3nm process, the 2nm process is expected to improve performance by 10% to 15% and reduce power consumption by 30%. Additionally, TSMC plans to introduce Back-Side Power Rail (BSPR) technology at the 2nm node, further enhancing chip density and speed.
Market Impact and Outlook
Potential customers for TSMC's 2nm chips include Apple, AMD, Intel, and Broadcom, among others. Apple is expected to shift its custom chip production to the 2nm process in 2025. Apple has already booked all available 3nm capacity from TSMC and is likely to continue securing the initial 2nm capacity. Moreover, TSMC's 3nm capacity is currently in high demand and is expected to remain fully booked until the end of the year.
The quoted price for TSMC's 2nm process is around $30,000. This high cost reflects the advanced nature of the 2nm technology and the difficulty of its development. Despite this, the demand for 2nm chips remains strong, especially in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) chips. With the surge in demand for AI and High-Performance Computing (HPC), the 2nm process is set to become a key battleground for the next generation of GPUs, CPUs, and mobile chips. TSMC is accelerating the expansion of its 2nm production capacity to meet the growing market demand.
In summary, TSMC's pioneering breakthrough in the mass production of 2nm chips not only demonstrates its technical strength in semiconductor manufacturing but also sets a new benchmark for the global semiconductor industry. With the mass production of 2nm chips, it is expected to further drive the development of high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, and mobile devices.
