Yageo to Add 10% Capacity: Passive Component Expansion
2026-11-02
On October 29, Yageo announced an expansion plan: by 2027, its tantalum capacitor and MLCC capacity will increase by 10% to 15% over current levels, with some new capacity coming online in Q2 2027 and the rest phased in during the second half.
Consumer electronics require general-purpose parts with low capacitance, low voltage, and small size, featuring mature processes and low unit prices. AI servers require high-end part numbers with high capacitance, high voltage resistance, and low equivalent series inductance, which have lower yields and higher unit prices and are highly concentrated in the hands of a few Japanese and Korean manufacturers such as Murata, Samsung Electro-Mechanics, and Taiyo Yuden. Yageo's AI-related revenue share reached nearly 20% in Q3, with computing, enterprise, and telecom applications growing more than 50% year on year, but its share of high-end part numbers remains limited.
MLCC Supply Constraints
The supply elasticity of high-end MLCCs is subject to three constraints.
● Production line conversion involves losses. When automotive-grade lines are converted to AI server grade, effective capacity may shrink to two-thirds of the original level.
● Leading manufacturers' capacity is being locked up in advance by long-term agreements: Samsung Electro-Mechanics has locked in four MLCC long-term agreements extending to the end of 2027 this year, totaling KRW 2.11 trillion, while Murata's consumer-grade part discontinuation schedule has been stretched to 2029 for final shipments, further making the conversion and expansion cycle more explicit.
Lead-time data confirm the tightness of supply. High-end MLCC lead times have stretched beyond 20 weeks; 16V 47μF part numbers for AI motherboards have extended from 30 weeks to more than 52 weeks. The number of certified supply chains is limited, and the gap is difficult to close in the short term through expansion alone.
Yageo's Choice
Under this supply-demand context, Yageo has set its long-term capacity utilization target at 85% to 90% rather than pursuing full load, in order to preserve production scheduling flexibility. The 10% to 15% expansion corresponds to simultaneous adjustment of AI and non-AI capacity, rather than betting on a single category. Meanwhile, global distributor inventory months have fallen from about 5 months to 4 months, with Greater China remaining below 2 months. Channel restocking demand coexists with customers locking in future supply through LTAs. Yageo's expansion pace is essentially positioned between rising certainty in high-end demand and still-volatile general-purpose demand.
SEMICONE Passive Component Supply
The difficulty in passive component supply is shifting from "whether stock exists" to "whether the part number is right and whether the lead time can be locked." As an in-stock distributor of electronic components, SEMICONE is supported by large-volume procurement pricing and lead-time conditions, rapid sample support, genuine-product assurance, and in-stock inventory, helping customers shorten sourcing cycles and keep passive component inventory risk within a dispatchable range. Today's hot-selling IC parts:
● FT4232HQ (FTDI) — USB to four-channel UART/FIFO chip, high-speed USB 2.0, QFN-64
● NSI8260S0-DSSR (Novosense) — six-channel digital isolator, 5kVrms isolation voltage, SOIC-16
● ADS8867IDGSR (TI) — 16-bit, 1MSPS SAR analog-to-digital converter, fully differential input, VSSOP-10
● 74LCX244MTCX (onsemi) — octal buffer/line driver, three-state output, TSSOP-20
