Broadcom Plans to Raise Up to $100 Billion in Debt for AI Chip Financing
2026-08-21
U.S. chip giant Broadcom is in intensive talks with a group of lenders to raise over $60 billion in debt for an artificial intelligence chip financing deal that will directly benefit AI companies such as Anthropic PBC. The deal, which is still being finalized, may also include approximately $30 billion in subordinated debt. Under the proposed structure, Broadcom would provide partial guarantees for senior secured debt ranging from $60 billion to $70 billion. Based on currently discussed figures, the total financing could reach as high as $100 billion.
The financing is expected to be issued through a special purpose vehicle (SPV), with Broadcom using its investment-grade credit to partially guarantee senior secured debt, thereby attracting institutional investors such as pension funds and insurance companies. Blackstone and Apollo Global Management, which established an "AI XPV platform" partnership with Broadcom in June this year, previously provided $35 billion in initial financing to Anthropic for deploying 1 gigawatt of Broadcom's custom chips, with a target of supporting over 20 gigawatts of compute projects by 2028.
Strategic Intent and Industry Impact
For Broadcom, this financing carries dual strategic significance. On one hand, by providing AI clients with a "chip-purchasing capital pool," Broadcom can lock in large-scale chip orders and expand sales of AI chips and data center equipment. On the other hand, it represents a key move to further challenge Nvidia's dominant position in the AI computing market. Broadcom's management projects that AI chip sales could exceed $100 billion next year. As industry demand shifts from general-purpose GPUs to customized ASICs, Broadcom is accelerating the construction of differentiated competitive barriers through deep partnerships with top-tier clients including Google, Meta, Anthropic, and OpenAI.
As AI model scale and user demand grow rapidly, AI companies are increasingly taking the initiative in building computing infrastructure, securing sufficient computing power by locking in chip resources in advance. However, the parties involved have not yet issued formal responses to the reports, and financing details remain subject to adjustment.
