Samsung Electro-Mechanics' MLCC rose 30% from August
2026-07-30
On July 29th, Samsung Electro-Mechanics, the world's second-largest manufacturer of MLCCs, officially informed its customers and distributors that starting from August 1st, all MLCC products under its Markup Business Code would be uniformly increased by 30%.
Samsung Electro-Mechanics stated that recently, there has been a significant increase in the structural demand of the global electronics industry. Although efforts have been made to improve efficiency and expand production capacity, the supply chain pressure has exceeded its tolerance limit. To ensure high quality and stable supply, this price adjustment is indeed necessary.
AI servers explode the high-end MLCC gap
The main reason for this round of price increase is the explosive demand for high-end MLCCs by AI servers. It is reported that AI accelerators consume a large amount of power in a short period of time, causing significant power fluctuations and heat generation. Therefore, a large number of small, high-capacity, and high-temperature-resistant MLCCs need to be configured around the power supply. Samsung Electronics has recently signed large-scale MLCC supply contracts for AI servers, and customers have begun to lock in long-term supply in advance. The order-to-delivery ratio (BB Ratio) has reached 1.31.
Japan, South Korea and Taiwan manufacturers MLCC prices
On July 23rd, the world's third-largest manufacturer, SunEdison, sent a letter announcing a price increase starting from September 1st. It also admitted that "even if customers accept the price increase, there is no guarantee of timely delivery." The global leader, Murata Manufacturing, had already initiated two rounds of price adjustments for AI servers and high-end automotive-grade MLCCs in April 2026 and July 2026, with an increase ranging from 15% to 40%.
Taiwan-based passive component giant, Kemet, has raised the prices of MLCCs across the board since July. Some models have seen an increase of up to 50% to 80%, and it has also included direct customers in the price adjustment scope for the first time. Walsin Technology, another Taiwanese company, has also followed suit, with the MLCC production rate exceeding 90%.
Capacity Constraint
TrendForce notes that leading manufacturers in Japan and South Korea are accelerating the shift of their production capacity originally allocated for consumer-level X5R products to higher-end specifications such as X6S and X7R, resulting in pressure on the production capacity of mid-to-high capacity consumer-level MLCCs. The inventory of mainstream product types is generally insufficient for more than 30 days. The construction of high-end MLCC production lines to reach mass production takes 18-24 months. The yield rate of high-capacity products is low, and the production line efficiency is only one-fifth to one-tenth of that of ordinary products. In the short term, it is difficult to rapidly release effective production capacity.
SEMICON MLCC Supply
In the situation where passive components such as MLCC are experiencing price hikes and shortages, SEMICON, as a professional chip distributor, has been deeply engaged in the supply of both active and passive components in stock, and provides customers with services such as BOM list matching, domestic alternative solutions, and sourcing services for scarce materials. Today's popular IC components from Semicon:
