HVLED001A ST Enhanced Peak-Current Mode Offline LED Controller
The HVLED001A is an enhanced peak-current-mode offline controller from STMicroelectronics, housed in a SSOP-10 (150 mil) package and purpose-built for high-power-factor (HPF) LED driver designs up to 150 W (single-stage to 75 W, two-stage to 150 W). It supports quasi-resonant (QR) flyback and buck-boost as primary topologies, with buck, boost, and SEPIC also implementable, making it a flexible core for medium- to high-power solid-state lighting supplies. ST's proprietary high-voltage process allows the HVSU pin to tolerate 800 V and connect directly to the rectified AC input for startup and line-voltage sensing, eliminating the traditional high-value startup resistor and bleeder network. The IC operates across –40 °C to +125 °C (Tj) with VCC range 8.8 V to 16.5 V, and embeds primary-side regulation (PSR) with optimized output voltage accuracy, direct optocoupler interface with feedback-disconnection detection, and a smart auto-recovery timer (ART) that auto-restarts the converter after fault events without compromising long-term reliability—key for outdoor and industrial luminaires where field serviceability matters.
Target use cases center on single-stage PFC-flyback LED drivers ≤75 W (retrofit lamps, downlights, small outdoor luminaires) and two-stage architectures up to 150 W where a front-end PFC stage feeds a DC-DC LED stage (street lights, high-bay industrial fixtures, area lighting, sports lighting, and signage). The 800 V HVSU and wide Tj range also suit harsh-environment outdoor drivers (street/scenario lighting, tunnel lighting) where surge and brownout resilience are mandatory. Any design needing HPF (>0.9) with low THD across 90–305 VAC universal input, QR efficiency, and dimming compatibility can anchor on this controller.
Alternatives Offline Controller Models
● UCC28810DGQ: TI 100 W-class PFC+flyback LED controller in 10-MSOP, similar single-stage HPF topology but with separate PFC stage control, widely used in North-American commercial lighting where TI ecosystem is preferred.
● NCL30060DDR2G: onsemi QR PFC flyback LED controller with integrated HV startup and analog/PWM dimming, up to ~100 W single-stage, a direct performance peer with slightly different protection tuning.
● AL1781: Diodes Inc. primary-side PSR + PFC LED controller in SOT-26, lower pin-count and smaller-power positioning (<60 W), useful when BOM cost and PCB area dominate over 150 W scalability.
