Qualcomm Expands Robotics Footprint with PickNik Acquisition

On September 23, Qualcomm Technologies announced it has reached an agreement to acquire robotics software company PickNik Inc. Terms were not disclosed, and completion remains subject to customary closing conditions. Founded in 2015 and headquartered in Boulder, Colorado, PickNik was initially formed as a team for the Amazon Picking Challenge, with Google as its first customer. Its most core asset is the long-term maintenance of MoveIt, one of the world's most widely used open-source robot manipulation frameworks.

The deal has limited financial impact on Qualcomm but is strategically significant. Qualcomm has set a target of $40 billion in non-handset revenue for fiscal 2029 and is assembling a complete physical AI full-stack platform through a series of targeted software acquisitions. PickNik's addition fills a key link between AI inference and physical manipulation.

Technology Path

MoveIt is a motion planning framework based on the Robot Operating System (ROS), providing robotic arms with complete capabilities such as collision detection, inverse kinematics solving, and trajectory planning. It is widely used in industrial automation, service robotics, and research. After PickNik renamed MoveIt Studio as MoveIt Pro, it further added a visual behavior tree builder, a production-grade runtime engine, and a force-controlled real-time controller, evolving it from a research tool into an engineering platform for commercial deployment.

After the acquisition, MoveIt and MoveIt Pro will be more deeply integrated with Qualcomm's Dragonwing robotics platform. MoveIt 1 and MoveIt 2 will remain open source and support third-party hardware platforms. The two sides plan to combine MoveIt with the Arduino VENTUNO Q development board to further lower the development threshold for the full process from AI models to motion control. The acquisition extends Qualcomm from chips and computing platforms further into the robot manipulation software layer, forming a closed loop of "AI model—motion planning—real-time control."
