Samsung Formally Halts New Orders for LPDDR4/4X

On April 17, 2026, Samsung Electronics officially ceased accepting all new orders for LPDDR4 and LPDDR4X, while simultaneously closing the channel for additional purchase requests. Previously confirmed orders remain unaffected and will continue to be executed as scheduled. Accounting for the production lead time of final orders, actual manufacturing of LPDDR4/4X will extend through the end of 2026, with production line conversion formally commencing in the first quarter of 2027. At that point, these two mainstream mobile memory products—which have been in mass production for over a decade—will be completely discontinued and formally enter their EOL phase.
Capacity Reallocation Toward High-Value Memory Products
Post-discontinuation capacity will be entirely redirected toward LPDDR5, LPDDR5X mobile DRAM, and HBM high-bandwidth memory. The core driver behind this decision lies in profit structure optimization. As highly mature legacy products, LPDDR4/4X have been under sustained pressure on unit gross margin. Under the AI wave, HBM and advanced DDR5 products face supply shortages with significantly higher profit margins. Samsung seeks to concentrate its limited wafer capacity resources on high-value product lines, discontinuing the operation of low-margin legacy products.
Notably, Samsung has simultaneously initiated structural adjustments to its 2D planar NAND flash production lines, converting relevant manufacturing resources for dedicated use in 1c DRAM production to alleviate the bottleneck in advanced-process DRAM capacity supply.
Market Impact and Competitive Landscape
Samsung's exit pace this time is notably more rapid than in previous transitions. Beyond internal profit considerations, external competitive pressure represents a critical variable. Domestic memory manufacturers such as CXMT have accelerated breakthroughs in key LPDDR5/5X technologies, with product performance and yield rates improving rapidly. Combined with more competitive pricing strategies, this has significantly compressed the profit margins of international leading manufacturers in the mid-to-low-end market.

Beyond Samsung's discontinuation of LPDDR4/4X, Micron formally notified customers of DDR4/LPDDR4 production cessation as early as June 2025, while SK Hynix has also compressed its DDR4 capacity share from 30% to 20%.
