TheTCA9535PWR, designed by Texas Instruments, is a 16-bit I2C and SMBus-compatible low-voltage I/O expander that provides a simple and versatile solution for expanding the number of general-purpose input/output (GPIO) ports when a system master microcontroller or processor runs out of available pins. This device communicates via a standard two-wire I2C interface, converting serial data into 16 parallel I/O lines that can be independently configured, significantly alleviating pin bottlenecks on the main processor. Supporting a wide power supply voltage range from 1.65V to 5.5V, it allows seamless interfacing between low-voltage modern processors and higher-voltage legacy peripheral devices without requiring complex external level-shifting circuitry, making it an essential component for simplifying bus architectures and reducing wiring complexity in modern embedded systems.
Technically, the TCA9535PWR boasts exceptional configuration flexibility, where each of the 16 port pins can be independently set as either an input or an output via the direction register, while its open-drain active-low interrupt output (INT) pin is triggered on any input state change, alerting the master processor and eliminating the need for continuous I2C bus polling.
