Industry News丨Nvidia Open Up Business; Micron HBM Chip; TSMC wins 3nm order for PC processors from Intel
2024-06-19

As the global semiconductor industry continues to rapidly evolve, a new round of market competition and technological innovation is brewing. Here is a fresh interpretation of recent industry dynamics.
1. Japan's Rapidus 2nm Fabrication Test Factory Launch Plan
Japanese chipmaker Rapidus plans to launch its 2nm fabrication test factory in April 2025. This initiative is supported by Belgium's imec and the United States' IBM, aiming to revitalize Japan's semiconductor industry. Meanwhile, TSMC's factory in Kumamoto is focused on producing mature technology chips.
2. Micron Technology Expands HBM Chip Capacity
Micron Technology is planning to establish HBM chip production capabilities in Malaysia to meet the growing demand in the field of artificial intelligence. The company also plans to expand its HBM R&D facilities in Boise, Idaho, with the goal of increasing market share to 20% by 2025. That's about the same as Micron's market share in traditional dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips, which TrendForce data shows is about 23-25 percent.
3. AMD Internal Data Breach Incident
In June 2024, AMD suffered a data breach involving sensitive information such as customer databases, product specifications and financial data. A hacker calling himself IntelBroker is selling internal data stolen from AMD on BreachForums, the dark web. AMD has responded by saying it is working closely with law enforcement and third-party hosting partners to investigate the incident and the significance of the data. AMD shares fell 2.4 percent on the incident, but the company is actively cooperating with law enforcement to investigate the seriousness of the incident.
4. TSMC Wins Intel's 3nm Chip Order
TSMC has received an order for Intel's new generation of laptop processor's 3nm chips, and wafer production has already begun. Intel plans to launch a new processor platform in the second half of this year, including the Lunar Lake and Arrow Lake series.
5. Nvidia Enters the AI Server Market
Nvidia is designing server racks for its upcoming GB200 flagship AI chip, a field traditionally dominated by server designers such as Dell and HPE. Nvidia's strategy could significantly impact the existing AI server market landscape.
6. Chip Talent Shortage Intensifies
With the rapid development of AI technology, the demand for talent in the semiconductor industry has surged. Nvidia has poached more than 500 semiconductor experts from Samsung Electronics, highlighting the competitive nature of the industry, especially against the backdrop of the AI boom led by Nvidia.
